Active Immunotherapy (vaccines)

Active Immunotherapy (vaccines)

Cancer vaccines are different from the vaccines that work against viruses. Instead of preventing disease, they are meant to trigger the immune system to attack a disease that already exists.

A cancer vaccine has cancer cells, parts of cells, or pure antigens (unusual proteins on cancer cells). The vaccine increases the immune response against cancer cells that are already in the body.

Cancer vaccines are thought of as active immunotherapies because they are meant to trigger your own immune system to respond. They are specific because they should only affect the cancer cells.

Cancer vaccines are targeted because they do not just boost the immune system in general, but because they cause the immune system to attack the cancer cells, honing in on one or more specific tumor antigens.

These vaccines don’t just boost the immune system in general; they cause the immune system to attack cells with one or more specific antigens. And because the immune system has special cells for memory that will help keep cancer from coming back.
